Holy Grail Foundation: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

What makes a product HG material? I think one of the best ways to judge is simply asking yourself, "Will I repurchase it?"  With so many great products out there, and as any product junkie will attest, it is hard to say yes to that question unless you really are in love.  And I am in love.  Quite simply, I will be repurchasing this again and again.  Armani Luminous Silk and I are in it for the long haul.

My skin is not the best, so I rely on a good base to help me achieve that flawless finish.  I am definitely not one of those lucky gals to be able to walk out the door sans makeup!  To give some background, I have combination skin, dry on the cheeks and chin area, and only slightly oily in the forehead and nose region.  I do have areas of hyperpigmentation, so I look for a foundation with buildable, medium coverage.

Enter Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.  My shade is number 8. Winner of the In Style Best of Beauty Award 2011 for best liquid foundation for 10 years in a row.  With its consistent accolades I had to give this formula a try.  I have been using it for 6 months now, and I've come to rely on this base to help me fake radiant, perfect skin.  What have I tried? Impossible to name everything, but in the recent past I have used Chanel Vita Lumiere Aqua and Matt Lumiere, NARS Sheer Glow, MUFE HD and Matt Velvet +, Laura Mercier Oil Free, Silk Creme and Tinted Moisturizer just to name a few...

This formula is an oil free, lightweight fluid with Armani's micro-fil technology.  It is insanely buildable, providing anywhere from sheer to medium coverage. This liquid goes on smoothly, imparts a healthy glow and feels like a second skin.  Used with the Armani blender brush, I achieve an airbrushed, flawless finish. Lately I have been wearing this without a primer, setting it with the Armani micro-fil loose powder, and it lasts all day, for 12 hours with no touch up.  This may be because my skin is dry in the areas where I need more coverage.

Most of the time when I hear words like luminous associated with foundation I think the formula will be too sheer for my skin type.  Armani Luminous Silk is different.  This hydrating fluid glides on like silk and gives all day, buildable coverage.  My imperfections are covered, while looking like my own skin! Available in twenty shades, wherever Armani cosmetics are sold, $59.00.

What is your favorite foundation? Is it HG material?

  1. When this first came out I drove 100 miles to get matched at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills. I went through at least 3 bottles of it and then my skin got picky, my pores clogged and my affair was over w/ Mr Armani. I tried one more time but still clogged pores. Pity too- it's a gorgeous finish and when the color is right it's magic!

Glad you have found your HG foundation- loads of us are still searching xx

  2. I love the texture of this foundation, but I can't get a good color match. I have only a few Armani products, mostly lipstick, blush and bronzer, but I love them. They are so beautifully made. Happy you found your second skin, Dr. P!

  3. MM- That's quite odd! What foundation are you using now?

Zuzu- Have you been matched more recently? They recently came out with 7 new shades, a few of which are for lighter skin tones.

  4. Seems to be good foundation, but as of now my MUFE HD is doing wonders for me. I really liked the pump in it, which we have to buy separately with many foundations.

  5. Great review! I've been dying to try this or the Lasting Silk foundation for a while now but I don't have a counter near me, so I'm unable to try out shades. It does sound like a really lovely foundation!

  6. MMD- MUFE HD is a good one as well. I like the finish of that.

Nat- have you tried looking at the Temptalia Foundation Matrix? It is really helpful to provide a guide as to what shade you would be.

  7. I so so envy you. I've heard great things about this foundation but could not get it to work for the life of me. For some reason, it goes on very dry and flaky on my skin. Right now I'm using MUFE HD but wouldn't say it's my HG foundation. Still on the hunt.

  8. Kristie- That's too bad that it didn't work for you! Chanel is coming out with a new foundation in the fall. Knowing Chanel I'm sure it will be amazing!

  9. Nisha,
I'm one of those girls who can leave the house sans make-up (just sheer tinted spf 30 most days) BUT I'm on the prowl for a good all around foundation for evening so I'll give this a try.
I dabbled in beauty on my blog today...what girly girl junkies we are!

  11. Xenia- I'm so jealous. But I'll still check out our post!

Larie-Give it a try! But definitely ask for a sample so you can try it out before you buy, as it is a little pricey!

  14. I was SOOOO disappointed when this didn't work out for me. It oxidized within an hour and I ended up with different face/neck colours. I tried it in two different shades and both were just totally wrong for me. I have oily skin, so I should have gone for the matte foundation but I heard so much about this that it had to be tried. We're just not meant to be. I'll stick with my beloved Laura Mercier.

  15. Liz- They do make a lasting silk which is the matte version, that has won several awards as well. Laura Mercier makes great bases as well! I love the secret camouflage concealer!

  18. I absolutely love this product. However, as an avid internet buyer I am finding it difficult to find a website that stocks the darker shade number 10, although Selfridges sells it in store, for some reason, they do not list it online. I'm a little dissappointed.
