My Top 5 Favorite Foundations/ Base Makeup

My obsession with beauty definitely began with foundation and skin care.  If I was stuck on a deserted island and could only take one beauty item with me, it would be foundation.  The transformative ability of foundation to give you a glowing, flawless complexion makes me feel more confident and beautiful.  From the simplest to the most dramatic of makeup looks, pulling it off successfully always begins with the perfect base.

A note about my skin, for reference.  I have combination, skin which is dry on the cheeks and more normal to oily on the forehead and nose.  Typically I do not wear primer or powder to set.  I look for formulas that are long lasting (meaning at least 12 hours), and do not require touch ups.  I also prefer a luminous finish over a matte finish.  I like light to medium, buildable coverage.  I mention this because everyone may not have the same results with these foundations depending on your skin type!

Here are my top 5 foundation/ base products, in no particular order:

The Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($59) remains my holy grail of foundations.  If I had to choose one foundation for the rest of my life, it would be this.  This is something I have repurchased, and will always have in my makeup collection.  I mix 6.5 and 8 for the perfect color match.  The coverage is medium, and the finish is luminous without looking greasy.  I find this to last all day on me (easily 12-14 hours) with no touching up.  What more could you ask for from a foundation?  Whenever I get compliments on my skin, I am wearing this or my Chantecaille Just Skin.  Another plus is that there is no SPF and it photographs beautifully.

Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua SPF 15 ($45) is amazing for its natural finish.  This foundation is the closest looking to actual skin.  When applied with fingers I can barely see any traces of this on the skin.  The formula is extremely light weight, feels like nothing on, and perfect for summer or humid climates.  The coverage of this is light, but still beautiful.  This is also a repurchase for me, and I can't see being without it in rotation.  If you are lucky to find a color match, definitely give this one a try.

The NARS Sheer Glow Foundation ($42) is the newest addition to my foundation collection, and already a favorite.  Firstly, the color match is perfect for my skin which is a plus with one shade!  The coverage is more medium to full, and I find this to give an extremely flawless complexion with a slightly dewy finish.  This also lasts all day, into the evening and looks amazing on the skin.  I can see what the hype is all about!  The shade range is also really comprehensive which is great.

Chantecaille's Future Skin Foundation ($70) is a luxurious treat for your skin.  This has the advantages of Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua in that it provides an extremely natural finish, but it also has excellent coverage. This is not too matte or too dewy, but rather a natural satin finish.  I also find this lasts all day on me, with no touch ups.  (This is a requirement!)  This is also a repurchase.  The only downside of this is the packaging which is a tub.  It is not very travel friendly and can harbor germs if you are not careful.  I actually pour a bit on to the back of my hand so I do not have to put my fingers in the jar, but you can waste product this way (and this stuff is pricey!)

Another obsession is the Chantecaille Just Skin Anti- Smog Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 ($64) which I have talked about many, many times before.  This product is absolutely amazing.  Whenever I wear this I get compliments on my skin.  Seriously, it is that good.  The coverage is fairly good for a tinted moisturizer, about light to medium. This gives the most beautiful, luminous finish like you are radiating happiness!  If I have a date or a special evening planned I will always wear this or my Armani Luminous Silk, depending on the level of coverage I want.  Worth.  Every.  Single.  Penny.

What are some of your favorite foundations?  Not that I need any ideas!

Burberry Fall 2012: Sheer Eyeshadow in Mulberry

Blog readers are you tired of hearing how amazing Burberry is yet?  Just look at that color!  Burberry's latest release for Fall is the Sheer Eyeshadow in Mulberry.  When I look at it, I see a mix of purple and brown.  Satin finish, no obvious shimmer, smooth as silk.  Previous to seeing it in person I looked at swatches online and was expecting it to be more red.  In direct sunlight a bit of red creeps in, but not much to my eye.

This is the perfect shade for fall,  and I see myself wearing this all over the lid every single day.  I think this will make a beautiful dark, slightly smokey eye that is suitable for day time.  Love, love, love!  Why do girls liken their love for cosmetics to their love for men?

This one is a must have.  Most shadows I own are either purple or brown but not the sweetest combination of both.  I don't think I will ever get tired of this one!  Burberry Sheer Eyeshadow retails for $29 and is available at Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Burberry Light Glow Blush in Tangerine

Last weekend I broke down on my desire to keep my makeup collection well edited, and went through with a epic haul and included in this was Burberry Light Glow Blush in Tangerine.  I went to the Burberry counter intending to purchase the new for Fall eyeshadow in Mulberry and I have had my eye on this blush for ages...and so it goes.

Another orangey coral blush.

The texture of the Burberry powders is amazing and if you have ever walked by a counter or swatched a shadow then you know exactly what I mean.  It is what draws me in, the soft, silky feel of the powder on my skin.  Next it is the color- just the right amount of orange and coral with the perfect amount of warmth to perk up the skin.  There is nothing that I love more than the sun kissed bronzed look of golds and corals and fine shimmers a la Jennifer Lopez. Hence the alarming amount of bronzers, and coral blushes and lip colors taking over my collection.  Even with labor day approaching I intend to rock this blush to pick me up out of the winter blues. It can be applied sheerly for a subtle look or more heavily for a contoured look.

The Burberry Light Glow Blush in Tangerine retails for $42 and is available at Saks and Nordstrom.  For other shades check out The Beauty Look Book and her comprehensive review of all the shades in the range.  For me, this is a must have for medium- tan skins.

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge in Camel BE306

I could not resist trying out one of the Shiseido Lacquer Rouges when I spotted them first a few weeks ago at Saks.  This is the first makeup item I have ever purchased from Shiseido and what drew me in was the promise of long lasting, opaque and glossy coverage that was comfortable to wear.  Sounds amazing, right?

The Shiseido Lacquer Rouge collection is a liquid lipstick with intense pigmentation, that delivers rich, full coverage that is glossy with one coat.  The applicator is the traditional doe foot, and works well with the formula to provide even coverage with a single coat.  The formula is thick in the sense that it is not at all liquidy like the YSL Glossy Stains, but not goopy or sticky.  It actually feels very comfortable on the lips, and is not drying at all.  In fact, I did find that the lip color actually improved the appearance of my lips rather than settling into the fine lines or highlighting dry patches.  Score!

The best part of the formula is definitely the lasting power.  I find that the finish stays glossy for a few hours, even with sipping water.  After about 3 hours or so, the gloss fades and leaves a stain of the color behind. Even without the gloss, my lips still felt comfortable.  I definitely noticed that this formula lasted much longer on me than the average lipstick or gloss, since nothing lasts long on me ever!

The shade range is limited, just 8 and mostly very intense shades. For swatches of all shades, check out Messy Wands.  I chose Camel, a brownish beige nude.  I like the color, and I think it would suit tan or dark skins well. Lighter skins will probably find this much too brown.  The only other shade I was interested in was Portrait, a mid tone pink, but even this was a bit too vibrant for me for daily wear.

The Shiseido Lacquer Rouge retails for $25 an is available now at counters.  I think if you find a shade that interests you, definitely give it a try!

Dustin's Current Le Metier de Beaute Favorites

Some of you may have heard that Dustin, makeup artist extraordinaire of Le Metier de Beaute, will be leaving the company to pursue a bigger and better opportunity!  I have to give Dustin all the credit for my love affair with the brand, so I will be sad to see him leave but my wallet is secretly overjoyed! He has created so many amazing looks for me, which I have featured on Product Doctor.  I asked Dustin what were some of his current favorite items from the brand so that those interested could check them out.

Rejuvenating Anti- Aging Night Creme ($350): This is potent stuff! So potent it is only recommended for use 2 to 3 times per week.  This is important because this stuff will really set you back.  That being said it is loaded with Retinol, SNAP-8, Coenzyme Q10, and L-Carnosine to improve appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pore size and to increase radiance and hydration.  I definitely noticed a difference in the appearance of my skin.

Anamorphic Lash Mascara ($34): The colored versions (Jade, Midnight, and Aubergine) are a fun alternative to black, and are sophisticated interpretations so that they work to enhance eye color without looking childish.

Precision Liquid Liner ($42): Amazing, amazing liquid liner.  It has a felt tip pen which is easy to control.  The only liquid liner I have ever been able to master.   It lasts all day without flaking or smudging.

Eye Crease Brush ($45): I actually did not have this so I picked one up.  Definitely a must have, very soft and fits perfectly in the crease for blending with precision.

Lip Creme in Caramel Creme ($36): Simply the best liquid lipstick and gloss combination! A very pigmented, nude shade. One of my favorite lip cremes as well.

Bold Statement: Tom Ford Wild Ginger

I think I may have found my holy grail bright lipstick.  I know that is a bold statement.  I have to thank Laura of buynowbloglater for turning me on to this one: Tom Ford Wild Ginger.  Regular readers of my blog will know that I am in love with the Tom Ford lipstick formula.  The colors are beautiful and saturated, highly pigmented and the formula is long lasting and comfortable to wear.  I don't mind spending the extra bucks on these because I enjoy wearing them so much!

Wild Ginger is a orange- red shade that I never would think to try on.  Think Mac Lady Danger.  The color is stunning in the tube, but on the lips it is something truly spectacular!  I am very surprised by how much I adore this shade!  I think it looks perfect with warm, tan skin and my summer highlights.  The color is bright, on trend and fun for summer.  Honestly, I love this so much I don't see myself putting this one away when the temperature drops.

Love. Love. Love.  You truly feel different with a bright, bold lip.  Wild Ginger is a color that makes me feel confident, sexy, sophisticated yet fun and carefree at the same time! I think that alone is worth $48.

Latest Obsession

My current obsession! I have tried so many highlighters.  Maybe the original is really the best. Check out the full post here.

Please bare with me as I am currently trying to figure out the best way to go about my blogging. I didn't want to start posting on Product Doctor about non beauty things because I didn't think all my readers and followers would be interested.  That being said, my followers are based here for the time being.  Honestly, I don't think I can reliably keep up with both so I will see how things go for a bit before making any decisions.  Thank you for your patience!
